If you have a physical location or serve customers in a specific area, Google My Business (now called Google Business Profile) is the single most important free marketing tool available to you. Here's how to set it up properly.
Go to business.google.com and sign in with your business Google account. Search for your business — if it exists, claim it. If not, add it with your exact business name, address, and phone number.
Verification is usually done via postcard (Google mails a code to your address), phone call, or email. In India, postcard verification typically takes 5–14 days. Don't change your address during this period.
Your primary category is the most important ranking factor. Choose the most specific option — 'Digital Marketing Agency' beats 'Marketing Agency.' Add secondary categories for additional services.
For a restaurant, use 'Restaurant' not 'Food.' For a clinic, use 'Medical Clinic' not 'Health.' Specificity helps Google match you to the right searches.
Businesses with photos get 42% more direction requests and 35% more click-throughs. Add your logo, cover photo, interior shots, team photos, and product/service images.
Use Google Posts weekly — share offers, events, updates, and new services. Posts appear directly in your profile and signal to Google that you're active.
Create a direct review link (find it in your GBP dashboard under 'Get more reviews') and share it after every positive customer interaction. WhatsApp is the most effective channel in India.
Aim for steady review growth — 2–4 new reviews per month is better than 20 reviews in one week then nothing for six months.
